This black, satirical comedy tells a story of a quiet Gypsy man, the first Roma pilot in Hungary, maybe the whole world. In 1957 the Soviet Union decides to give Hungary – as its friendly ally – the opportunity to choose the first cosmonaut for the first manned spaceflight. Comrade Jenő Karmazsin, the first lieutenant of the Kunmadaras air force base knows the best candidate for the job: Lajos Serbán, the personal mentee of Karmazsin is like a son to the first lieutenant. Lajos, or Lajkó as he is called by the others, has an enormous attraction to stars dating back to his difficult childhood. It stems from his mother, who introduced him to gypsy astrology and who sadly died in an unfortunate fatal accident caused by one of Lajkó’s rocket experiments.
While Lajkó is getting ready for his journey to the stars, he doesn’t know that he has been chosen for this mission for a reason. The Soviets have already sent five rockets to space, but none of them returned. Well, not in one piece anyway. Lajkó is awaited by a committee of generals and a suicide mission in Baikonur, Kazakhstan. By the time Lajkó understands that he is being used as a lab rat, it’s already too late. There is no turning back.
